Nearly three decades after launching its first gasoline-electric hybrid, the Prius, Toyota is moving to convert most of its fuel-powered Toyota and Lexus models to pure hybrids, with the goal of eventually making all models "hybrid" rather than "electric," two executives told Reuters.
The report said that due to the high price of electric vehicles, charging trouble and other factors, resulting in a slowdown in the market demand for electric vehicles, Toyota's hybrid strategy aims to consolidate its "dominant position" in the hybrid market. "Going forward, we plan to evaluate on a line-by-line basis whether full hybrid makes sense," David Christ, Toyota's head of sales and marketing for North America, told Reuters. These evaluations will be carried out with each model redesign.
The Toyota RAV 4, the best-selling SUV in the U.S., for example, already accounts for about half of local sales with its hybrid model. In 2026, the car will receive an upgrade, and two people familiar with Toyota's product planning discussions said Toyota is most likely to abandon the all-gasoline version in the North American market, but no final decision has been made. At present, Toyota's 2025 Camry is no longer available in a pure fuel version, and models including the Land Cruiser (Land Cruiser) and Sena are only available in hybrid versions. Two other people familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said many hybrid models may also be offered plug-in hybrid versions with larger batteries.
Toyota Motor in the United States market sales of pure electric models only bZ4X, plug-in hybrid models for RAV4 and Prius, while there are hydrogen fuel cell vehicle Mirai, most of the rest are hybrid models. The first hybrid based on the new platform and engine is likely to be a plug-in version of the Corolla, which is "likely" to go on sale in China in 2026 and in the US in 2027, according to people familiar with the matter.
